In the contemporary world, alongside government, “governance” is regarded as an inseparable component of state administration, where the government is not the sole determining factor; civil society, non-governmental organisations, the media, and the market also play significant roles. This book discusses the origin and evolution of the concept of governance, the distinction between governance and government, and themes such as good governance, e-governance, and green governance, while also examining key aspects of governance including public participation, public service delivery, citizen charters, and the right to information. Notably, this subject has been included in the syllabus as an Inter-Disciplinary Course (IDC) for undergraduate students of the University of Calcutta under the National Education Policy 2020, and written in simple, accessible language, the book aims to help undergraduate students become familiar with some essential concepts of governance.
