Kallol was barely fifteen years old in 1969, still in school, when he was picked up by the police from his home, tortured, thrown into prison, and then externed from Calcutta. The city in the late 1960s and the early 1970s witnessed the Naxalite rebellion, brutal police repression, and their aftermath. This is an intense personal recollection of a political movement which had drawn young men and women from various parts of the country. It is also a story of the very organic life of Calcutta, where street vendors, middle-class neighbours and late-night revellers rubbed shoulders with premier poets, musicians and intellectuals. A compelling account, it will be of special interest to students of History and Politics.
