The role of music is immense in the history of the origin of a language-based nation and the evolution of its culture. To explore the history of Bengal and the Bengalis, one cannot overlook this truth. From the time the Bengali national identity began to consolidate politically, the practice of ancient Bengali music also began. The journey that started with the Charya songs has evolved through various turns to reach today's rock, band, folk, and modern music. Along this path, it has taken the forms of Padavali, Mangalgeeti, Baithaki songs, folk music, patriotic songs, Ganasangeet (people's songs), or modern music. The perennial socio-economic and political events of Bengal have profoundly influenced this transformation of Bengali music. For instance, during the Swadeshi era, patriotic songs were created out of the need to expel foreigners and spread national consciousness. Again, Ganasangeet was created to link the leftist mass awakening with the tide of people's movements that emerged from the 1940s. Similarly, how the globalized Bengali from the 1990s onward embraced music in the style of pop, rock, and bands—all of this has been highlighted through the lens of research in the book "Hajar Bachhorer Bangla Sangiter Itihas." This book, intended for the undergraduate history level at Kalyani University, will also appeal to general readers. The five chapters of the book discuss the early period of Bengali music, Bengali music during the British era, Bengali instrumental music and musicians, Bengali folk music, and the history of music in modern times. The skilful expression of author Sudipto Sadhukha's half-century of practice and perseverance is reflected in this volume. Incidentally, he has presented this subject to college and university students for a long time. The preface of the book is written by Professor Alok Kumar Ghosh of Kalyani University. It is hoped that the book, written in a completely new format, will be well-received by students, readers, and researchers alike.
