At the foothills of the Himalayas lies a village called Naxalbari. In the late 1960s, this village became the cradle of the struggle to build an exploitation-free India. This narrative belongs to a young man newly arrived from Malda. After coming to study Chemical Engineering at Jadavpur University in Kolkata, his understanding of life was shaken to its core. From the Food Movement to Naxalbari, the political climate of the university permeated not only him but the entire student community. The clash between students and the CRPF was only the tip of the iceberg. The author, Abhijit Das, left the campus and set out for the villages with the dream of building a new India. He came face to face with a new world—one of rural poverty, harsh living conditions, and the struggle for survival. Stepping beyond the familiar boundaries of the middle class, he marched in the ranks of the foot soldiers. These foot soldiers return again and again. Even in defeat, they return. They never utter the final word.
