Product Overview
Nearly half of Annadashankar Roy’s published works consist of essay collections. Consequently, it is only natural that the essay genre plays a pivotal role within his literary oeuvre. On one hand, his essays stand as exemplary specimens of the art of prose. On the other, they delineate the author’s unique path and domain within the realm of essay writing—a path defined by a sense of responsibility that inspires engagement with the intellectual currents of the age; by a courage that fosters an unwavering disregard for mere popularity; and by a spirit of protest—the solitary, almost lonely protest of a devotee of truth standing against the silence of the intelligentsia. The essays and vignettes included in this anthology possess not only significant historical value but also remarkable ethical and literary merit. Annadashankar’s historical essays serve as the ever-vigilant conscience of Bengal. His essays are simultaneously social and literary, contemporary and timeless, subjective and objective, bold and contemplative; they represent a luminous coexistence of intuition and logic. The essays in this collection addressing democracy, egalitarianism, and human rights transcend the bounds of ordinary critical evaluation.
